Children's learning activities blog

We did a couple fun things this month from a new blog that I'm reading.

Caroline's current favorite is playing with "Fuzzies." Basically, you just sort them into cups. We are doing it by color but you can also sort by size if you have a variety pack. I even mixed it up by using fewer cups and putting a couple colors into each cup. I also put different quantities in the cups and we talked about the concept of "most, least, more, and less," which it turns out she already understands.

We started using spoons to make it fun. Now my utensil drawer is no longer safe. We've decided that an ice cream scoop is the best utensil.

Another fun one from the blog was a color search game. We used some colored fun foam squares that we used to jump onto when Caroline was learning her colors. Then we found all the toys upstairs to put on each square.

I took pictures of them all because the blog said you could make a color book for your child. I don't know if I'll get around to that.

Anyway, it was fun to introduce the concept of sorting. It's something else to explore besides the ABCs and 123s stuff.

We have been sorting the pom-poms ("fuzzies") too! I saw it on that same blog. Tyler is getting good at using tongs to pick them up. I figure that we he's getting a fine motor skill in also. You can get some cheap ones at Wal-Mart for under $2. Anyway, he asks to do it first thing when he wakes up in the morning...even before breakfast. It's a hit!

Also, if you're looking for another fun sorting game, I have one for you! Last year I bought the mixed nuts that they have out in the produce department sometime before Christmas. They have the big walnuts, almonds, etc. that you have to crack open yourself. Well, Tyler enjoyed sorting those into the little cups on a big muffin pan. He liked the noise they made on the metal, and I was amazed that he was able to put each kind of nut in its own group!
